Bollywood's Biggest Hits of 2010

2010 was filled with big movies like Kites, Action Replayy, Guzaarish, Dabangg and Golmaal 3. But most of the big movies did not do well at the box office. Instead, we saw a first-time director giving us the biggest hit of the year in Dabangg and some surprise hits.
Trade analyst Vinod Mirani gives us the annual box office report card.

The list doesn't include recent releases Tees Maar Khan, Toonpur Ka Superhero and yet to be released Tera Kya Hoga Johny.

10. Tere Bin Laden
Cast: Ali Zafar, Pradhuman Singh, Sugandha Garg, Nikhil Ratnaparkhi
Directed by: Abhishek Sharma

Tere Bin Laden received positive reviews. For a small-budget film made by a first-time director and a little known Pakistani actor Ali Zafar (known for his singing), it did really well. It started off slow, but got a decent collection thanks to through word of mouth and good reviews.

Ali Zafar's work was appreciated so much that he bagged two films Yash Raj Films' Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar.

9. Ishqiya

Cast: Naseeuddin Shah, Arshad Warsi, Vidya Balan
Directed by: Abhishek Chaubey

Ishqiya received great reviews and was appreciated by one and all because of great performances by the three central characters -- Naseeruddin, Arshad and Vidya, and a tight screenplay.
The song Dil Toh Bachcha hai Ji was such a huge hit that Madhur Bhandarkar's forthcoming movie is titled the same.

 8. Badmaash Company

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Vir Das, Meiyang Chang
Directed by: Parmeet Sethi

The film received mix reviews; in fact most reviewers gave it a thumbs down. The film also opened opposite a big multistarrer Housefull but it stood its ground.
The film was made on a low budget of Rs 25 crore and did fairly well. Company's four main characters were character sketches of real life people.

7. Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Kangna Ranaut, Prachi Desai, Randeep Hooda
Directed by: Milan Luthria

Once Upon a Time In Mumbaai started off slow at the ticket window, but word of mouth pulled the crowds to the theatre by the weekend.

Every actor in the film did a splendid job, though the girls, Kangna and Prachi, had little to do in it.

6. Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Konkona Sen Sharma, Paresh Rawal
Directed by: Ashwin Dhir

As the film's title suggests, Ajay Devgn and Konkona Sen Sharma's characters have to deal with an uninvited guest (Paresh Rawal), who overstays his visit. Rawal creates a lot of trouble for the couple, and they resort to finding means to get rid of him.
The film saw some good comedy, and laughter, as everyone knows, is the best medicine for a healthy box office run.

5. Peepli [Live]

Cast: Raghubir Yadav, Omkar Das, Malaika Shenoy, Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Directed by: Anusha Rizvi

Peepli [Live] went to many international festivals, and even competed at the Sundance Film Festival. In India, it started off slow, but picked up soon, going on to become India's Oscar entry.

The film was dogged by controversies. The director claimed that she was not given her due and that producer Aamir Khan was hogging the limelight.

4. Love Sex Aur Dhokha

Cast: Anshuman Jha, Raj Kumar Yadav, Neha Chauhan, Amit Sial, Arya Devdutta, Herry Tangri
Directed by: Dibakar Banerjee

Banerjee, who made terrific films like Khosla Ka Ghosla and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye had another good outing with Love Sex Aur Dhokha. The film starred only newcomers, yet went on to become a hit.

3. Raajneeti

Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Katrina Kaif, Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpai, Arjun Rampal, Naseeruddin Shah.
Directed by: Prakash Jha

Starring a host of actors, Raajneeti got mixed reviews. Yet, it did very well at the box office, especially in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
Ranbir and Katrina scored yet another hit, making these actors some of the most promising stars to watch out for.

2. Golmaal 3

Cast: Mithun Chakraborty, Ratna Pathak Shah, Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade and Kunal Khemu.
Directed by: Rohit Shetty.

The third in the Golmaal series, G3 stuck gold at the box office like its predecessors. Though the third part was not as interesting as the earlier two, G3 clicked at the box office, clearly stating that the audience are more interested in comedy films then serious drama.

1. Dabangg

Cast: Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Arbaaz Khan, Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia
Directed by: Abhinav Singh Kashyap

Dabangg broke 3 Idiots' record of highest collection in the first week. It got the highest opening on the first day and the highest weekend gross as well.

Dabangg was a first timer for many people involved in the film. It was Kashyap's directorial debut, Arbaaz's first production and actress Sonakshi Sinha's first film. Though the story was not great stuff, Salman's performance and Mallika Arora's Munni Badnam Hui stole the show for Dabangg.
